Way too many thoughts crowding my brain about this book right now. More later. Every new to me Laxness becomes my favorite Laxness until the next Laxness.

Disappointing. I really enjoyed Independent People, this not so much. The first section was touching and sad, and it showed some promise, but book 2 was a complete shitshow. I stopped at 50% as I just found the narrative wearing and dull.

World Light is a gorgeous, lush, dripping novel of beautiful, awful humanity. There is simply no other way to describe this masterpiece of society, individuality, and naïve spirituality.

While this 600 page tomb doesn't read fast and is a bit repetitive, there's no denying this is a marvelous book worth reading. Not heavy on plot, this humane book examines the life of a man with pantheist inclinations who has deep feeling for Nature, poetry, literature, and beauty in all its forms, who struggles in a world where people like himself are so often viewed as useless wretches. The book is at times psychological, philosophical, absurdist, and historical, written almost always with dry wit and great prose.

Laxness' finest work.
