This book has helped a lot of people to realize the follies in the U.S. environmental landscape and created a generation of environmentalists when it first came out. It's adventurous, crude, and doesn't beat around the bush on the characters issues and our governments in our environmental stewardship. Reading it in today's landscape there is still a lot to learn from the explicitness and expressiveness of the characters despite the Deus ex machina.

I liked a lot of things about this book (interesting prose with some fantastic lines, a thrilling and inspiring plot) but the sexism and anti indigenous racism overshadowed everything. Also if I had to hear that audiobook narrator say “pinyon pine” one more time I was going to jump off the Glen Canyon Dam.

Couldn't get past the constant racism from one of the main characters. Pretty sure i'm supposed to support the main character in most books so why bother?

Going into this book I think I expected an inspiring environmental activism book that dealt with water issues in the American Southwest. I came to find that it was about extremist environmental activists who were crass, racist, sexist, and extremely hypocritical. I kept looking for the purpose of the characters being so  difficult to relate to but I could not figure it out. The descriptions of the west are interesting and unique with similarly interesting chase scenes but this was not enough to make the book worth reading in all honesty.

Abbey manages to be racist and sexist in the first handful of pages and it only gets worse from there. Additionally, the prose is so purple, I'm surprised it hasn't been taken for a medical exam
