Quick read, straight to the point. The lack of description and worldbuilding is both a strength and weakness. It's nice to have a fast-paced epic fantasy, but the lack of exposition makes it harder as a reader to connect to the characters and care about the world.

Sometime in the early 80's I was reading a lot of Moorcock, Elric, Hawkmoon, Count Brass and some of his sci-fi stuff. My buddy Eric Messerol decided to get in on the fun, but didn't want to read the same books I did, so he started reading the Corum books. I'm not sure if he ever finished them, but I do know that I never got around to reading them, even though I've had them on my shelves for more than 30 years.
Obviously, I finally got to them. I would normally give a book like this 3 stars, but I'm giving an extra point for it NOT seeming dated, more than 50 years later. I don't mean that it has a style similar to modern books, I just mean that it wasn't cringy and didn't have me laughing at its seriousness. Of course it is nostalgic to hear names like Arioch and Xiombarg so that may have helped too.

Blbost!

The first book of Corum, last member of a strange ancient race of people now being supplanted by the Mabden - humans. Corum seeks for some kind of justice on behalf of himself and his people, and discovers that he is part of the larger battle between Law and Chaos . . . I thoroughly enjoyed this tale, and I'm looking forward to the next volume in this edition . . .

Based loosely on Irish mythology, a great read in the Eternal Champion universe. A great series.

The love subplot was forced and could have been tweaked to be more natural in the same chapter it occurred, but other than that, a pretty great faced-paced, pulpy, epic fantasy. Glad I gave it a shot. Real cool to see the influences from this book on the other stories I have have read post-Moorcock.
