I am going to write this review a little differently, I was inspired by the letter format the ladies over at the Mundie Moms did. They wrote a letter to Luc and I thought it was awesome! So I am also going to write in letter format too but, I am going to write to Lisa instead :) Be sure to check out the Letter to Luc over at the Mundie Moms’ blog here: http://mundiemoms.blogspot.com/2010/09/book-review-personal-demons.html because it rocks! So here is my letter:
Dear Lisa,
Your good! Before reading the book I read the quote on the front cover that says “If you had to choose between Heaven and Hell, which would it be?….Are you sure about that?” I thought (naively) I did know, but after reading your book my answer is a resounding, NO! I have no idea how you managed to make me fall for the demon in this book, but you have and then some. Luc is just crazy hot, literally and figuratively, you have created one sweet character there. I am also loving the fact that even though he is the demon it is Gabe, the angel, who I think cheats a little at trying to win over Frannie or maybe I am just a little bias now. Gabe is not so innocent though, is he? I think he is using a little too much of his power to try and sway her and Luc is the one fighting a little more fairly. How ironic is it that the demon is trying to play fair and the angel is fighting a little dirty? Nice touch.
I also really appreciated how you switched perspectives from Frannie to Luc and it was done at just the right moments. You managed to paint a very complete picture of the story that made me appreciate the book more. Leaving Gabe’s perspective out of it was also a great move. I mean, he is an angel, I bet all his thoughts are all boring and pure, who wants to hear that? Luc’s were much more interesting!
I should also mention the steaminess of your book. It has been a while since I have read a YA that played up the romance without it being forced or just bad. The tension between your characters could have been cut with a knife and watching Frannie try to decipher her own emotions through it all was classic. Watching the boys fight over her was pretty fun too, there is no potential for a love triangle here, it is there! Frannie is struggling between the ultimate bad boy and the ultimate good guy, and who wouldn’t want to be in that position?
There were also moments where you book made me laugh out loud because of things that had nothing to do with the plot, but were just great quotes such as “there is no crying in baseball.” Totally awesome! I have seen A League of Their Own multiple times and that is my favorite quote from it, seeing it in your book just cracked me up, plus Luc said it so that was just a bonus. A couple of my favorite bands also got a quick mention like Paramore…love them!! So thank you for adding in those fun references that helped me personally relate. I know you were not aiming just for me, but you definitely got me now.
Overall Lisa, your book was amazing. I started and finished it all in the same day, I did not want to walk away from Luc….umm…Luc…ahem….sorry, got distracted, I meant the story. Personal Demons was a thrilling ride in a world where classic preconceptions are called into question. Does being a demon automatically make you evil? Does being an angel automatically make you good? I think after reading your book I would have to rethink those questions and that is what makes your book so impressive!
I cannot wait for the next book in the series to come out so I can see what is going to happen next. Thank you for an amazing book!

This book started out for me as a tentative three stars. I was really liking Frannie, the heroine, and I thought that her present day personality being built around events from her past that were essential to the story was a great touch. I was intrigued by the so-called "dark secret" and thought Luc was ever so slightly sexy. But as the book progressed, I liked it less and less and less. It became "Oh, woe is me! I'm IN LOVE with a demon AND an angel and I KILLED my TWIN BROTHER. Whatever shall I do? Oh, hey, Luc. Let's make out, and then you can listen while I bitch and whine some more about how horridly atrocious my life is!"
Yeah, that got old fast.
All of the supporting characters were weak. I didn't give a crap about any of them! I didn't even like Gabe. I feel like he was just a piece of cardboard someone spray painted ("maybe they won't notice") and propped against a wall to provide conflict. In truth I found him sleazy and annoying.
The twist at the end was alright. I certainly wasn't expecting it.
I liked the idea of Sway, but I didn't like the whole premonition thing. So overdone and really, does the chick need TWO supernatural powers? Isn't one enough? Make up your mind.
I find Christian mythology, angels and demons and heaven and hell to be really interesting, but I didn't think it was well done here. The crap about God and Satan making a pact to keep balance in the universe was awful. It would've been better if Desrochers had gone the classic route and stuck with the fallen angel bit.
And the names. Lucifer Cain? Gabriel? Hades High? Do I really need to be smacked in the face with this information? Luc = demon. I get it.
But the most irksome thing (other than the deterioration of the once-cool Frannie into a whiny, annoying person) was the emotional shallowness of the novel. Every time a character realizes a Deep Meaningful Theme, it's just thrown in with the regular dialogue, a sentence of revelation and then back to waxing rhapsodic about the demon's abs. None of them were deep or meaningful at all, and the lack of feeling and weight attached to such thoughts really annoyed me. It made it hard to take anything away from the book.
Luc's transformation from demon to mortal was equally shallow and unmoving. The Luc-Gabe rivalry was so not intense enough. Facsimiles of feelings that slid off my brain like grease.
And don't even get me started on the narrative. For her part, Frannie beats the word "'cause" to death with a blunt hatchet, and Luc can't stop obsessing over the color of Frannie's bra. Ew.
Overall, a shallow, redundant book with obnoxious dialogue, a plot drugged on narcotics, and soul-crushingly dull characters. Only the beginning saved it. Read the first fifty pages, but then, beware! I'd turn back if I were you…

Love the song she used for Luc, Savin' Me by Nickelback! And Frannie's You Found Me by The Fray. I wish authors would do this more! The book was about good vs. evil. Luc vs. Gabe but that changed when Frannie's used her gift and changed the game plan. I cant wait to read the second book! Love this!

So I really hadn't planned on reviewing this - or reading it for that matter. It had been an on-a-whim buy. That said, I'm not quite sure how I feel about it.
I felt like the writing style was nice. It wasn't too fancy and didn't use any unnecessary words which I thought was good. I liked the idea of the book. Sure, it was a bit cliche but I thought that the author did a good job putting a spin on a classic Heaven versus Hell type of story. I did go into the book thinking there would be a lot of romance but for the most part, the author did a good job of keeping it pretty PG.
The plot at times was a little shady, though. I didn't really know what was going on. There was a lot of parts I thought could have been taken out. Because of this, the story seemed to drag on.
The book was split up between two different POVs - Luc and Frannie.
I absolutely adored Luc. His chapters were always exciting and kept me interested, even when things were kind of slow. I loved reading his thoughts and seeing how he developed as a character! He went from being a jerk to being a completely caring guy!
Frannie, in comparison, was pretty disappointing. I really didn't see what Luc - or Gabe for that matter - saw in her. She was always whining and so wishy washy. One second she said she loved Luc, the next she was kissing Gabe! I couldn't keep up with her! It made me really angry, to tell you the truth. I felt bad for Luc! Here he was doing everything in his power keeping the girl he loved safe and she was sitting in her room wanting to make out with some other dude! If I were her friends, I would've hit her upside the head for leading on both guys like that. I couldn't believe that no one thought it was odd that she was practically dating two guys at once.
And I really didn't even feel a connection between Gabe and Frannie in the first place. Frannie just liked him because he was hot! The entire time she was with him - except for the end - I felt like he was being completely fake. I mean, I know he's an angel at all but he just didn't have any characters flaws. That made me not like him. I'm not someone who's particularly fond of perfect characters.
If it wasn't for Luc, I truthfully probably wouldn't have continued on with this one. I felt like he was just such an awesome character, I really couldn't stop reading. I had to see how things turned out for him.
All in all, this book had an interesting idea and a good male lead but the heroine and supporting characters, along with the plot, were weak for me. I will be reading the sequel though. I hope this series improves!

I really liked this book! The guys were very swoon worthy and the story itself was new and interesting. Plus some of the demons were badass and I like that Frannie was a strong character. I can't wait for the next book! It is pretty hard to choose between the guys!

Personal Demons Is An Amazing Debut. Lisa's Writing Style Is Really Fun And Easy To Read. I Loved Each Character! The Only Flaw I Found Within This Book Is That It's Told Through The Characters Luc And Frannie... Never Really Giving Us Enough About Gabe. But I Hope The Others In The Series Will Eventually Venture In His Direction. Other Than That, This Is A Very Awesome Story; Being Very Different From Other Novels Out There Today With A Fresh Plot & An Interesting Twist. I Devoured It Cover To Cover And Enjoyed The Ride! I Highly Recommend This Book! :)
