Engaging

The life of a man told through the women he encountered through his life. Incapable of love the male protagonist jumps from one woman to the next, he is not a sympathetic character.

What makes the book interesting is how the story is told by the women. How each collects another small piece of the overall puzzle, their emotions and thoughts, and how at the end, as they understand him better, the more they distance from him.

I quite liked Kawakami’s style of writing after chancing upon The Nakano Thrift Shop so I had to give this a go when I saw it at the library. The Ten Loves of Nishino wasn’t quite as engaging, but I found it interesting nonetheless. Through the eyes of ten women, the book gave form to Nishino’s mysterious yet intriguing character. Kawakami’s specialty seems to lie here as she balances his enigmatic qualities with others that make him familiar to her readers. Overall a lovely read.

As always I enjoyed Kawakami‘s storytelling but… Nishino was just so deeply unsettling (and I know that was his point) and annoying, I just can’t give this book more than 2 stars.

The short-stories in this book made me feel the same as Helen Oyeyemi’s ’What Is Not Yours Is Not Yours’: each of the stories had interesting stories and premises and would’ve liked to stay with them longer. I did dislike Nishino from the start and am not interested in themes considering sex. Although the translation felt wonky from time to time, I’m interested in reading more of the authors work!
