A couple of years ago I met someone whose favourite Urasawa work was Pluto. I had only read 20th Century Boys and Monster, and I loved it. But I didn’t know the span of Urasawa’s genius until I read Pluto. Pluto was loosely adapted from Astro Boy, a character beloved by many probably even when I wasn’t even born. This is kind of the grown-up, adult, morally challenging version of Astro Boy. The main character itself isn’t Astro Boy (Atom) in this book, but he played a great part in it. Pluto asks the question, “Can robots feel?” and took very in depth delve on the question. We see various versions of future robots that are maybe outside of our everyday imagination. Pluto is genius, the story revolves around robots but isn’t lacking emotions, or empathy whilst we read it. This is the kind of manga I’m looking forward to read in the future.

An amazing reimagining of Tezuka's original short story that fully unpacks themes he only hinted at, while adding more nuanced emotional depth and political subtext, for a story that remains timely and even more relevant 20 years later.

Not just my favorite manga so far, but officially one of my favorite overall series ever!

this manga series is just so good! SO GOOD! i just loved every part of this. the little bit of plot twist at the end is something i didn't expect but it made sense. the plot itself is not very long but it's deep and complex and the emotions this series brought just hit so hard. the characters' personalities are realistic. either humans and robots, they perfectly represented the diiferent human emotions in reality. the ending is very straight to the point, with no unnecessary scenes. i do think that 8 volumes are just enough for the plot, not too long and not too short either. i never expected to cry when i first picked this up but i did and the impact on me is huge. i really had a wonderful reading experience. this has a really solid beginning and an equally solid ending, which you could not see in every stories and i'm glad i was able to read this.

i very much understand why this manga series is so highly acclaimed. a masterpiece, indeed! i can confidently say that this series is now included in my top manga series i've ever read. and since i'm researching things about this manga, i just discovered that netflix will soon release an anime adaptation of this series! i'm so freaking excited to see the story and the characters come to life!

i highly recommend this manga! this is such a short read but you will received more than you expected.

I really enjoyed this last volume and the series as a whip was great and kept me hooked all the way through..as a whole I’d give the series 4 stars! I will say with this last volume though things felt a bit rushed…when I finished I found myself wanting more…like 2 chapters more just to end things off better would have been nice but I still really enjoyed the series and recommend it to anyone who wants to read it…I’m not that much of a sci-fi fan but this was a good one.
