Great world building, banter and gothic vibes. I felt that this book was descriptive but not so descriptive that it leaves nothing left to your imagination. The romance was very slow burn and I ate it up. I like that it wasn’t the main focus of the plot and that it was so delicately balanced.
There were some twists and turns that had me gasping, some moments that had me blushing and a few that made me enraged.
I also really like Elspeth’s relationship with the nightmare and how he communicates through rhyme and riddles. Very creepy and infuriating but it serves a purpose.
I was confused at first but everything tied together nicely and cliffhanger left me wanting to immediately pick up the next book.
Moderate: Alcoholism, Death, and Blood

The story was riveting, the characters are engaging, and the world building is constant. Rachel Gillig has a wonderful way with words that just made me want to cling to every sentence as I turned through the pages.
Character development isn't really a thing that happens in this book it's more about character revelations as we get to see the people behind their masks - their real motivations rather than the MC's preconceptions. However, this approach makes it feel like it's the Nightmare's story and Elspeth is the POV character as she is the only constant character that does not change while we follow her around. It's interesting and different.
