Ik mag de protagonist niet, stelt domme vragen aan de familie. Ook haat ik de timeskips, was echt niet invested.

Often passing through the Jewish neighborhood in Antwerp this book makes a very interesting read. It thaught me a lot about the Jewish community and traditions. I would like to rate this higher, but while I appreciate the efforts the author made she sometimes came across quite ignorant. From 'Should you be asking this?' to 'You should definitely not be asking this' I often felt like she was provoking just to provoke. The fact that in the very last pages father Schneider asks her to not write about them does leave me with a bitter feeling.
Very interesting, but at what cost?

This was a fascinating read. I was expecting a much fluffier book than what I got but that doesn’t mean Mazel Tov doesn’t have its funny and light moments. At the same time, Margot is quite honest about both her reservations and the things she and her friends said and did throughout their history together, about her own pre-judgments and the things she disagrees with. She writes with warmth about the Orthodox Jewish family she becomes friends with, and the way she described each family member made me feel like I knew them, too.

Een interessante inkijk in een leven waar je meestal geen toegang tot krijgt en tegelijk ook een aanzet om aan je eigen speciale vriendschappen te denken.
