5 beautifully written short stories. Each thought provoking in their own way.

I came across this by chance when it was displayed in a local book shop. And I'm so glad I did! I think I have found a new favourite author. These are not romantic 'love' stories, as in Hollywood fairytales. They are love stories from reality which show the unexpected angles love can emerge from and morph into due to time and circumstance. It all runs pretty deep! But I love that about this collection.

These stories are about grief when you lose someone you love, responsibility in love, responsibility despite love, love between strangers who have never even met, love between humans and animals, making the wrong decisions in life and love but finding out years later. Authors like this - who have such an understanding of the human condition always stun me.

I hear Schmitt is a popular author on the Continent, but no other British friend had ever heard of him. Perhaps because he tends to write short stories rather than novel length? I don't know. As an Elena Ferrante fan, I'm surprised his work isn't similarly well known. I'm really glad to have discovered him.
