Sweet story about Cyril the lonely squirrel and his new friend Pat the.... squirrel? Everyone seems to notice that Pat is a rat except for Cyril. They play games and have fun together, until finally the other animals help Cyril realize that Pat is a rat, and tell him that squirrels can't be friends with rats.
Of course, all ends well in the end, having learned that friends can be different and still love each other.

This could have been brilliant, was visually delightful and had a great concept, but fell a little flat. Ages 4-6.

This book teaches young kids that it doesn't matter what your friend looks like, it is how you feel when you are together. I thought it was a cute book with a good message. I can't wait to share it with students since it is on the 2020 Texas 2x2 list.

Age: Preschool-1st grade
Animals: Squirrel, Rat
Against cultural norms, Cyril the squirrel and Pat the Rat become best of friends. Suspense and a triumphant rescue exemplify the power of this unlikely friendship.

What fun! Cyril, the only squirrel in the park, one day meets Pat, another gray...erm "squirrel". They become fast friends, even though all the other animals try to warn him that Pat is too different and that they shouldn't be friends. Luckily, Cyril isn't down with that. A wonderful story of friendship not being affected by our differences.

Cyril and Pat tells the story of a lonely squirrel who is able to find a new friend, Pat. The other animals in the story are in admiration of Pat, recognising his positive qualities. That is until they realise that Pat is in fact a rat, resulting in all the other animals hen encourage Cyril not to be friends with Pat.
This would be a great story for discussing the friendships individuals can have, no matter if they are different from one another.
