"no one ever grows poor from giving. That sharing what you have does not make what you have worth any less."

This story deserves the recognition it has and more. The growth of each character and the soul of this story are the best part about Other Words for Home.

And boy did it make me cry like 20 times.

A lovely story about relocation and finding a new home and voice. This novel in verse is geared towards middle-grade readers but has something for older readers, as well.

I don't cry easily for books. I don't know what my problem is - I swear I'm not a narcissist or a sociopath. I didn't know what part of [b:Where the Red Fern Grows|10365|Where the Red Fern Grows|Wilson Rawls|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1518702249l/10365._SY75_.jpg|115] was supposed to make me sad. But Other Words for Home wrecked me. I closed the book only 20 minutes ago, and I have a hole in my heart you could drive a Semi through. This book consistently made me chuckle and then, in turn, grasp my chest in something very near to physical hurt.
I hope very many teachers share with their students to this wonderful book, as well as librarians and parents. I hope it opens up the floor to some very genuine conversations. I hope children see themselves in the wonderful Jude and her hopes, and sadness, and vulnerabilities.

"Other Words for Home" is the story of a young Syrian immigrant to America with equal parts light-hearted interactions and the underlying struggles of children from war-torn environments.

As someone often critical of authors using a child's voice for narration (as it usually comes off forced) this perspective worked perfectly for the subject and character, Jude. With these situations, there can be high political backing from the author behind the words but here there was not and it was extremely refreshing.
As an outsider to the conflicts Jude recounts/experiences, it served my understanding and empathy for her to be introduced alongside her, as a child, learning about the complexities of immigration and what comes with it.

A great book for people wanting to learn a little more, empathize about human achievements and woes, and not want to start drawing hard political lines about countries they don't personally know.
Jude provides a great middle ground perspective, affirming there are two sides to every story, and that stories can be happy and sad at the same time.

Honestly, I recommend it to any age group. Let your kid read it, it's cute, and it'll give them a great starting point in understanding other people's lives.

SUMMARY: Told in beautiful and poignant poetry, follow the journey of a young girl, Jude, from living with her family in her seaside hometown in Syria, through growing political tensions, to a new home in America, where everything is new, loud, and filled with surprises.

This novel is one beautiful song that you’ll want to read from beginning to end without stopping. Warga’s poetry, in Jude’s 1st person voice, is bursting with life. It’s vivid, heartfelt, funny, sad, and joyful. The poems flow together and from one mood to another so well. The book doesn’t shy away from topics like war, life as a refugee, and islamphobia, but always returns to the beauty in Jude’s story--her family’s love, pride in her culture, growing up, and finding her voice. It’s a quick read, but dives into so many different relationships Jude has through which you see so how complex life is on both sides of the ocean. It’s 2020 Newberry Honor book and I can see why! Honestly, this book is an amazing read for kids and adults alike!
