A good read for provoking thought... I read a chapter or two & stewed on them. I spent days ruminating on the idea of friendship being to "provide a mirror so the other person can contemplate his image from the past". However, the ending of the book was somewhat anti-climatic, and uncreative compared to the rest of the story.

Thought-provoking page-turner. I'm going to be thinking about this for a while, esp the ideas of friendship utility, multiple identities in different places, the tree of possibilities, and eyes.

Mundanity, companionship, memory, the erotic, friendship and love and identity woven throughout this tiny little novella, explored with such interest by Milan Kundera and translated by Linda Asher.
I finished this in a day weeks ago but I keep thinking of points made in this one. Such an absolute treat! This is my first Milan Kundera and it definitely won’t be my last. Any reccs for the next I should pick up?
Sorry it’s such a short review. I just figured short was better than nothing at all. I really liked this one, and liked the “older” protagonists. It gets a little “weird” as it goes on, even dreamlike in moments, but so grounded in human condition.
