The story is weird and will probably confuse kids, but the room-filling giant computer was a nice blast from the past from before I was even born. I enjoyed this as a history major, even though I won't be reading it for my messy-themed storytime.

Partly I love this because it's set in the Toronto I grew up in, but partly it's just the fact that it's a funny kid-and-quirky-adult-against-the-boring-old-world story, and of course the kid and quirky adult win, and I'm always on their side. I fear, however, that this book may be past its prime. What kid now knows that computers were ever the size of rooms? Even I'm a little young for that--the earliest computers I remember could easily fit on a desk, although of course I grew up knowing there were room-sized computers out there.

One of my favourites as a kid. Still obsessed with blackberry jam.
