Very beautifully written and there are some great sentiments here. The whole broken wings motif was beat beyond death, though. Like every other scene had to have some quip about broken wings. And very much a product of its time in terms of how women were described.

This is my favorite book of all time. In my brain it’s perfect. Gibran’s writing feels like it’s ripping my heart out of my chest and smashing it in the ground. It’s hard to pick a favorite quote, but I’m going to pick one that stood out the most to me during this read:
“Life is full of happiness and freedom; why don’t we take this heavy yoke off our shoulders and break the chains tied to our feet, and walk freely toward peace?”
“Life is full of happiness and freedom; why don’t we take this heavy yoke off our shoulders and break the chains tied to our feet, and walk freely toward peace?”
Stoic and poignant, Khalil Gibran's verses touch many a deep chords within you. You awe at the mysticism of love and cringe at the endured pain that it manifests into, both elevating and punishing at the same time.

There are longer love stories, written using tens of chapters, that don't manage to hit and impact a heart the way this small book with its meagre ten chapters does
Rating 4.5
Probably the most well-written book I’ve ever read. Although it tells a story it’s written more like poetry. The only reason why I didn’t rate it 5/5 is because The translation of Gibran’s work is a tad too explicit.. stuff like explicitly naming Selma as the embodiment of the oriental woman. I wish it wasn’t so explicit because it was alluded to the entire time. Beautiful writing though, honestly I’ve never read anything like his work before. Truly unique
Explores themes of love, youth, mortality and pursuit of knowledge.

tbr challenge: read a sad book
