Also titled "Immersed in nature, devoid of nurture", Owens is a real-life scientist publishing her first work of fiction in her late 60's. There is hope for us all!

This complex work delivers a meaningful look at humanity at nearly a YA level of text. It explores abandonment, isolation, love, and environmentalism in deep and thoughtful ways. As one that appreciates oceanic and aquatic life big and small, I enjoyed how the layers of a marsh, from sky to sand, served as central characters. Fuck those big scary primates, I want to hang-out with the sea birds and the courtroom cat. It's also a very solid maybe murder mystery.

Novel's like this are why we read and getting to grow with Kya felt like a gift, even not knowing the emotional direction of the next chapter. And from a structure standpoint, very cool flashback choices and just slick delivery of the story. 4.5 stars, not perfect, but would recommend to anyone regardless of their usual genre.

I think I felt every emotion while devouring this book throughout a long travel day home. It was everything I needed and I understand why it came so highly recommended ! I don’t say it often but... I can’t wait for the movie!

I read this for a book club. Everyone seemed to enjoy it, and it led to some great discussion.

At the beginning, I liked the mystery part better, because I didn’t care about the victim and the other storyline with Kya was so heart-wrenching.

Trite. This book is trite.

I didn’t know this book was so popular until I was halfway through reading and couldn’t put it down. I enjoyed the characters, the way the mystery unraveled, and am always happy to suspend disbelief from time to time for the sake of a good story. A perfect summer read. 4.5 stars.

Excellent book!

You can’t help but fall in love with Kya in this story. I love the use of nature and poems woven throughout the story. Her struggles with acceptance and abandonment and all without that strong family bond. I find it interesting that hers mother’s love stayed with her and made her strong even though she abandoned her.
