I absolutely loved the first 10% of the book. Such gorgeous nature prose. And it went downhill from there. Uncomfortable sexy time moments, but mainly uncomfortable because of how they were written. A 70 year old white author writing the words of a black man in the 1960’s…. Could have been better.

The whole
court session felt a little bit too step by step but it wasn’t the worst

If the book had been as good as the first 10%, it would have been a 5 star read. Maybe even a future reread.

Happy to say this one lived up to the hype!
Such beautiful writing and my heart broke a million times over for Kya who overcame adversity with such grace. I was so invested in this memorable cast of characters. Quite sad to be leaving them behind.
Almost too scared to watch the film now. Please don’t ruin it 🙏

It's been so long since I've been swept up in a book like this. An absolutely riviting read, though not in a heart pounding way. You are just fully absorbed into the world of this book. Owens' writing style has a deeply vivid, poetic quailty to it, while never crossing the line into overwriting or self-indulgence. The pacing is masterful, even with a non-linear storyline, there was never a moment in which I felt bored or impatient. Filled with deeply loveable, wholly deplorable, confusingly complicated characters, and pervaded by a deep sense of mystery, this tale unravels in a truly captivating fashion that kept me up reading into the wee hours of the morning.

The Firefly

Luring him was as easy
As flashing valentines.
But like a lady firefly
They hid a secret call to die.
A final touch,
Unfinished;
The last step, a trap.
Down, down he falls,
His eyes still holding mine
Until they see another world.

I saw them change.
First a question,
Then an answer,
Finally an end.

And love itself passing
To whatever it was before it began. A.H.

-I always believed that she killed him. And he deserved it from the very start. I am so satisfied
