This book is an absolute masterpiece. Rarely have I read a book that takes place in such a well-developed setting, with such great characters, and with so much depth to it. Yes, it is long. Yes, it's descriptive. But I believe these things make it even better. It's perfect as a standalone, but also is the perfect start to the epic series that is the Dune Chronicles. This truly is the Lord of the Rings of the Science Fiction genre.

On a second readthrough, I only came to love it even more. I caught on to so many things I completely missed the first time around. Definitely has solidified itself as one of my top five favorite books of all time.

I watched the most recent Dune movies (1-2) before reading the book. I’m of the opinion that it’s worth consuming both the movies and the book. The book really shines when it comes to revealing all the inner thoughts of the characters as the plot beats are hit; I loved learning about all the little things that the protagonists noticed—things that are really hard to replicate in the screen. I think the movies shine by filling in the gaps of the moments of grandeur in the plot. I also appreciated some of the rearranging of the plot that they did, particularly the choice of omitting some of the characters mentioned in the book. Now, my opinion may change, depending on if the removed characters are necessary for plot points in later books (which I haven’t read as of this review)—we’ll see!

Forced me to slow down and be fully immersed in the world of Dune. So beautifully written! I would recommend this book for those who desire a challenging read that immerses them in sci-fi.
