this book was a bit hard for me to rate because on the one hand, I can’t deny that the idea behind it is brilliant and it’s lauded for a good reason. On the other hand, it could be very slow and difficult and I’ve never taken so long to read a book before. And it gave me a months long reading slump. Still, none of that made it a bad book in my eyes, it was just very dense.

It helped a bit to remember when it was written.

This is not my kind of book, and it didn’t hold my interest. I should have approached it with a better attitude.

I like to have a main character who’s worth cheering for. Paul is not that. He is Frank Herbert’s experiment it seems with the concept of meeting your destiny on the road to avoid it. Something of that nature. The book has a pretty desperate need for editing. It is far too lengthy. Lots of inner dialogue.

This is kne of the first books that I've read that was kind of hard at first to read but when I got into it I couldn't put it down. It's a slow burn but the journey the book goes on and seeing how paul changes throughout the book makes for an amazing read.

This book is an absolute masterpiece.  Rarely have I read a book that takes place in such a well-developed setting, with such great characters, and with so much depth to it.  Yes, it is long.  Yes, it's descriptive.  But I believe these things make it even better.  It's perfect as a standalone, but also is the perfect start to the epic series that is the Dune Chronicles.  This truly is the Lord of the Rings of the Science Fiction genre.

On a second readthrough, I only came to love it even more.  I caught on to so many things I completely missed the first time around.  Definitely has solidified itself as one of my top five favorite books of all time.
