Osaa Kallio olla idiootti.

Ikävä kyllä Maria Kallion viides tapaus jää kompuroinniksi, jota piristää lähinnä protagonistin raskauden tuomat haasteet. Murhankin menin ratkaisemaan ennen etsivää, mikä laimensi jännitystä entisestään.

Better than I initially expected! There was too much pregnancy stuff for my liking, but I can't really complain as pregnant crime investigators are basically nonexistent in literature (the voice was important to hear). You can see that the book was written in the 90s by the way some stuff is outdated and many serious issues are not handled adequately (by today's standards), but the book also offered an interesting insight into the last decade of Finnish history that I didn't yet exist to experience. Can't believe that restraining orders weren't a thing here in 1997, wth??

I've been bingeing this series and finding it really fun, but there was one thing that stuck out to me here:
SpoilerMaria's co-worker falls for their boss's daughter. She's seventeen; he's ten years older. Maria - generally speaking a firm feminist and someone who's very concerned about young women and their exploitation - thinks this is the cutest thing and is highly encouraging of the two of them potentially dating. Like... I remember the nineties and I get that this wasn't uncommon at the time, but this makes me sad. Particularly given the key revelation at the end of the book regarding who committed the murder and why. Do the extra three years make it okay somehow?

I'm not quite sure why I stuck with this one. I couldn't get invested in the characters and a pregnant woman continually referring to her unborn child as the creature really put me off. The story was ok, but what was meant to be twists just turned into distractions. The author has done so much better, this made me sad.

Well despite losing most of the traits that made me interested in this character, I still enjoyed the next book. And we all know I gotta finish a series.

Tämä oli paras Maria Kallion seikkailuista! Tarina ja sen käännökset toimivat todella hyvin. Odotan jo innolla seuraavan lukemista!
