I randomly picked this book off the shelf at the library and it turned out to be pretty good

I REALLY liked this book. Part serial killer murder mystery, part growing up pre-Internet days, this book was really captivating and haunting. The love the two sisters shared reminded me of my sisters and how we did everything together growing up. The serial killer part actually made me feel very anxious and scared, just like the characters. Great read!

Almost a mystery, also a coming of age novel, also the story of two sisters trying to cope with a mother who suffers from mental illness and a dad who has little time for them, and the peers at school who teeter toward dismissal.
This is loosely based on the true story of a serial killer in Marin, and the daughters of the detective on the case.
Entertaining and sweet.

I loved the first 3/4ths of this but Rachel as an adult, obsessed with the killer made me like it a little less so. Still, I would recommend it to anyone who loves coming of age novels and serial killers.

An enjoyable story, but some of her timelines don't work out and I found that annoying. She mentions Rockford Files several times - watching it with their dad all the time because it was his favorite. According to her timeline, their dad left in 1974. Rockford Files premeired the fall of '74, so I don't see that they would have tons of memories of that show and their dad. Another annoyance was her mention that the cable was cut off not long after dad left. No one had cable in 1974..... There was also a mention of the internet long before it would have been widely available. Those things bother me and make it hard to get into the story. BUT.. in this case I did enjoy it. It was a little redundant at times - I get it - Dad's a womanizer, Mom's depressed....

All in all, fun QUICK read.

Tempted to give it 2.5.

Great thriller with all my favorite elements: page-turner, sister story, told from a young girl's point of view, and things wrap up in the end the way I think they should. All-around great story!

I am a big Joyce Maynard fan. I really enjoyed the first 90% of this book - but thought that the wrap up was disappointing.
