Like the world building, complex characters and interactions, non-predictable storyline, realistic magicness, cool sci-fi and fantasy elements
Difficult writing style to get used to in terms of language and the way things are visually described

The trailer for Part 2 made me want to revisit this book I had read as a teen. At the time, I wasn't comfortable enough in English to read the original version, but this time it's the one I picked, and I can officially say that Herbert's prose is not to my liking. The dialogues especially, as they feel unatural and quite often look like Herbert's stitched together two different conversations. Although I still enjoy the themes and how Paul's arc is handled, I'm downgrading my initial rating. If Goodreads allowed more precise marks, I'd pick a 2.75 for this one.

On a positive note, I've entirely revised my opinion of Jessica. As a teen, I found her harsh ; as an adult, I admire her resilience and her arc interested me way more than the other characters' ones. I don't think I will reread the other books in this series, although I'm curious to see if I'd love Alia as much as I did when I was younger. Unless I go back to the french edition, since I'm not sure I can endure more of Herbert's style but can't remember being bothered by the translator's style on my first read.

Really enjoyed the movies and heard the books had all of that and more. It did!

I tend to stray away from grand-sweeping narratives, sticking with more personal and small scale stories, but this has shown me that it’s so good.

It is 90% world building and politics; but really interesting world building and politics.

Anyway, I’ll be checking out more stuff in the future with the same level of scale, I feel. It’s a nice change of pace.

SOLIDO.

Any book that can rivet you one week flat reading you deep into the early morning til 4am is a bloody good book. Before Aidan Pryde, before Luke Skywalker, before Ender Wiggin, before Ash Ketchum and Pikachu; before Ned Stark or Robb, before Daenaerys or Jon Snow even - there was Paul Atreides, progenitor of so many of our modern (Western) pop-culture myths. Three cheers to Muad'Dib, Shai-Hulud willing!
