A beautifully written saga reminiscent of famous Chinese tragedies. Amy Tan is a master storyteller and in her newest weaves an intricate tale that delves into the bond between mothers and daughters. It is an emotionally charged novel that is highly recommended.

Normally, I love Amy Tan books and this is the first that I didn't like! I had a hard time getting into especially due to the detailed information about courtesan life - it was a bit too detailed for my taste! Also, the story wasn't that interesting to me and I didn't connect with the characters - I didn't care about them! Glad that I read the book, but wouldn't recommend it.

Not my favorite from Amy Tan. Some parts were so boring, I admit I only skimmed over them. The story spans 3 generations of mothers & daughters caught up in a mixture of Chinese and Western culture. It begins in the late 1890's. Lucretia Minturn is a defiant young woman growing up in San Francisco, the daughter of scholars. She meets a Chinese man who gets her pregnant. She follows him to Shanghai not knowing that his family will never allow them to marry. So it goes, on and on. I waded thru and finally finished, the ending was somewhat satisfactory

I think I've read this story before! That's what I kept thinking as I turned the pages. Alas, I found it dull and I was content to let my Kindle library loan end without bothering to finish the book.
