truly loved this one! at many points, i found myself laughing alongside ruby at her insightful, rapturously loving, and delicate (but no less sharp) exploration of food and the relationship we (as individuals, cultures, families, systematically, etc.,) have to it. while not perfect, utterly delightful, and without doubt, both healthful and, in many ways, healing !! 4.5/5 :,o)

Tandoh is so good at making a relatable, cross-referencial, non-judgemental look into what and how we eat and how we can enjoy it. I made pancakes with lemon and sugar the second day I started reading, and it made me rethink how to enjoy the tastes. There is no 'bad' food!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I really enjoyed this. The last third, on food ethics, queerness and food, and a little last section on Christmas really made it for me! This was a joyous and thoughtful read by a queer woman of color in an industry where she is deeply underrepresented and while it wasn't mind-breakingly informative it was just fun and interesting.

I fell in love with this book. Her writing is so delicate that reading it feels like a form of self care. It is a pure celebration of food and eating, written with a palpable passion. She clearly conceives and articulates what makes food so integral and wonderful. She masterfully ties food into aspects of life, from culture, conventions, gender politics, colonisation, the emphasis on "wellness", and the challenges so many people, especially women face with enjoying food. Ruby Tandoh, through this wonderful gem, eloquently paints the totality of humanity through the lens of food, cooking and eating. I am glad to have this book in my life; it is pure beauty.

I think I would’ve hugely benefitted from reading this in my teenage years or early 20s. Now in my 30s I think I’ve already come to learn most of her insights and lessons on my own time. I did love the discussion of food & film, and Tandoh really impressively transports you to certain scenes and certain plates.

Amazing Writing

Really amazing, wonderful writing. Queer and fat-positive. So refreshing for a food book - Ruby, please keep writing! Can’t wait to reread...
