This wasn't my favorite Agatha Christie book, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. I mostly enjoyed Anne's fun spirit and intelligence. The story was hard to follow at times, but I suspect that's partially due to the time this was set and written. But overall, fun to read, with more twists & turns than I was expecting!

This had the potential to be a fun thriller (much like The Secret of Chimneys and The Seven Dials Mystery), which I actually like better than Christie's better-known puzzle mysteries. But much of it is set in South Africa and Rhodesia, against the backdrop of empire, and as I had just finished reading Trevor Noah's "Born a Crime," this proved to be a problem for me. The light breeziness of English tourists is harder to swallow when you know what's going on with the native population. De Beers plays a small role--that's right, the blood diamond company!
Aside from this, I didn't love the first person narration, and the plot was a bit too convoluted for my taste.
The last third of the novel flew by, though. Still, too much wrong. Would not recommend.

A romantic adventure that depends on coincidence but still fun escapism.

It’s adventure on the high seas meets spy thriller meets matinee idols.

Ich liebe es. Der vermutlich witzigste und unterhaltsamste Krimi, den ich jemals gelesen habe. Einfach toll und außerdem noch spannend. Sie hat mich wieder aufs Glatteis geführt bis zum Schluss.
