"What are little boys made of? Pirates and dogs and noisy bullfrogs. What are little girls made of? Dresses and sweets and everything neat."
"I don't wear dresses!"
"And I don't like frogs."
"You don't, do you? Okay, so boys are made of cookies and spice, and jump-roping mice? And girls are made of snails and rocks and butterfly socks!"

I like this book. It's fun and playful and turns gender norms on their heads. I like the pictures, but don't quite love them. Same with the text. Would display and use.

Apparently the make up of girls and boys is a whole lot more complicated than that old rhyme could begin to explain. An older man who I assumed to be a group of children's grandfather, makes up new verses for it that highlight how multifaceted children are, irrespective of their gender. Sonja Wimmer's illustrations are a wild and wonderful celebration of this. Sarah Tsiang's text is written in rhyming verse that works. It was a delight to read out loud.

A really good book that try to dismantle the stereotypes of boys and girls. Nothing to intense here, all is done in a funny way with illustrations that are absolutely astonishing, amazing work from the illustrator. Overall a book that worth looking at!

I think I would have totally connected with this book as a kid- I totally connect with it now! Who's to say what little boys and girls are made of?! Love this exploration of all the different things little girls and boys might be into- whether they fit society's gender stereotypes or not!

Sugar and Snails takes that little saying about what boys and girls are each made of and spins it on its head in the best possible way.

Reading this as an adult, I appreciate a children's book that takes the idea of gender norms and tosses it aside in favour of personal preferences and identity. As a kid, I would have loved this. (I was very girl power, but also a tomboy). I think it makes for a really fun and funny way for kids to also maybe see themselves. The illustrations are super cute and fun and pretty.

Definitely recommended for kids in need of a fun picture book. I would say it's worth a read for anyone though. I wish it had been around twenty years ago.

Perfect. Absolutely Perfect. Perfect story, perfect illustrations. So many have heard the saying “ What are little boys made of? Frogs, Snails, and puppy dog tails.” And girls are made of “sugar and spice and everything nice.” This story turns that saying on its head. Because some girls are made of dinosaur tales, and some boys of bumblebee wings. My favorite one is “balloons, mutts, and chicken butts”. A wonderful look at what makes a child.
