Very thoughtful and somewhat groundbreaking in its presentation of gender roles and the New Woman, this was an interesting text.

A few interesting moments, some interesting monologue about feminism and strong women, generally interesting relationship conflicts, but way too many rambling monologues, stories about nothing, religious zealotry, and racist moments. Was there a farm here?

Enjoyed it quite a bit actually! A good book on colonialism (not that I understand it), with multiple sub-plots, tragedy, romance...
Beautiful descriptive passages of the South African landscape. This was one of the first books about South Africa to be written by a South African.

Does some interesting things with gender, and has a lot of complicated thoughts on religion that I personally enjoyed. Lyndall’s “New Woman” plot leaves a lot to be desired, but she’s a very interesting feminist character.
