Not the crispest/best writing--a bit scattered with more ideas than were utilized. But I love a weird reality-adjacent post-post-apocalyptic setting. (Might I recommend [b:Shades of Grey|2113260|Shades of Grey (Shades of Grey, #1)|Jasper Fforde|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1327563734l/2113260._SY75_.jpg|2118671] instead?)

"As a long-time coward, I have been a connoisseur of fear in my time and fear of Gaki was definitely a superior vintage." - My favorite line in Cage of Souls. I'm an increasing fan of Tchaikovsky's books. Of the three I've read, The Tiger and the Wolf, is the only one I didn't definitely enjoy. And that had more to do with my dislike of shapeshifting characters than the writing or the story. Tchaikovsky is a superb writer. This book kind of meanders it's way to its conclusion, but the writing, the world, and the cast of characters carry it through the sometimes murky plot. I'm especially looking forward to reading Children of Ruin (out next week!) and Dogs of War sounds quite interesting. I highly recommend Children of Time.

Prison-based escapades in a dying-earth fantasy setting, with New Weird and steampunk touches. Tchaikovsky churns out novels speedily, and I imagine this is fairly typical of the end results - it feels like a solid first draft dashed out by a talented storyteller, and if he'd spent another few months tightening the language and plot it could have been great. Not as good as Children of Time then, but I was still entertained. High 3*/low 4*
