Among Gods

This may be the first episode of a slowly simmering fantasy, but it sure pulled me in. A combination of winning narration and strange, dark twists sets up an uneasy mood that'll have your nerves jangling even before you know what's coming.

We follow Keela, a girl with a slow wasting illness and an uncaring family. Just when things are looking bleak for her, she finds herself in the unenviable position of being the object of an dangerous person's fascination. For Silver is an aniel, a powerful and tricksy servant of the Gods who preside over her world, and no mortal is safe when they decide to play. And then come the rumours of darker things: the Daemons, reapers of souls and assassins of the Gods, are coming, and no one knows why.

If you've read [b:Gods and Monsters Box Set 1|51576785|Gods and Monsters Box Set 1 (Gods and Monsters Box Set #1)|Klarissa King|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1582413906l/51576785._SY75_.jpg|73930474] then you've got a head start on the setting, but if not, never fear. All the detail you need is there. For in this story we aren't cavorting with the twisted Gods of the realm, but their servants: aniels and Daemons. Don't be fooled though, no one and nothing in this world can be split up into good and evil. Just variations of malevolence and indifference.

It's not just the mythology of the world, but the characters too. Keela isn't a swooning heroine or butt-kicking badass. She even says she's a coward, though she seems to have plenty of inner strength when it counts. Her family are downright horrible, so you can't blame her. The handsome Silver is inscrutable, his motivations muddied by his dark nature.

I love how we delve into the winding streets of the Capital. I love the description and atmosphere and general uneasiness Keela's tone of voice puts across. There's plenty of mystery woven into this first episode, and by the end it really is strange, tense stuff. Being episodic, it ends on a cliffhanger, one that leaves you desperate to know more.

-I received a free ARC of this e-book from the author. This does not influence my review-

This is a mini series set into the world of the authors other books. At first I was skeptical because usually when authors say you don’t need to read the other books to understand what’s happening- it’s a lie. This wasn’t the case with this book. The world and levels of gods and daemons was explained well and I didn’t feel like I was missing any information.

I kind of really wish this wasn’t a mini series, I was hooked pretty quickly and enjoyed the story so much! I liked the characters and the world and that the FMC wasn’t the average strong female lead. I’m very excited for the next book!

*i did receive an arc from Booksprout in exchange for a review*

As soon as I saw the heroine's name I bought it. What was odder was the boy friend's name: the same as my father's. It was otherworldly; it was kismet. Thank goodness the story matched my interest!

First, Keela inherited an illness at birth in a society that worships Gods who are known to maim, give pestilence, poison, and burn humans. Nonetheless, the humans have no sympathy for those who are affected, and Keela was born in a family that worships Prince Poison. My suspicion is that her mother was poisoned when she was born, but who knows?

I absolutely adore scrappy, disadvantaged MCs who overcome trials, and Keela does not let the loathing, epithets, and outright cursing deter her from living. I just wish she treated her own servants and sole friend that way, too. Mikhael is a sympathetic wanna-be boyfriend who overlooks her illness yet she uses him. She ignores her servant most of the time and feels upset that her servants don't go the extra mile for her...what gives? But I loved her anyway.

The world-building is limited to the Capital where Keela lives, and that is fine. There are hints of pirates, and other isles. It seems like a colonial puritan ethic but with numerous deadly Gods.

I also loved how Silver, the Aniel, was described. He was the perfect fairy Godmother...oh, yes, I got the distinct vibe that this is a Cinderella remake, and I adore that. Keela attends the Ball in her finest: a hand-me-down corseted, ragged, black gown. How celebratory! Not!

Although there was no real action, the world-building, characters, and lively repertoire kept me entertained, and it seems a short prequel to the main story. The Daemons arrived! Long live the series!

I was not sure if I can follow the story since I had no idea about this universe of Gods, monsters and daemons. I was really surprised that I could easily follow the story and understand all the "politics". I thought the MC, Keela, was a bit whiny in the begining, but this is far from the truth. You can see a strength and determination under her fragile facade. This is a small novella and it makes you wanting more.
I cannot wait to read the rest of the books and maybe visit the previous series, Gods and Monsters.

This book follows Kella, a girl who is very sick and whose family hates it. Kella lives in the God's city where monsters roam which is hard enough when you arentdying from a mysterious illness. All Kella wants from life is to get married and live a normal life but her life takes a turn when an ancient aniel plucks her from the masses and gives her special favor. Then to top it all of Daemons come to town and she learns what it truly takes to survive in a city of monsters.

This book is a quick read that was entertaining and the world that Quinn Blackbird created did not disappoint. Sometimes with books this short there is a lack of world building or character development and this is not the case with Among Gods. I cant wait to get my hands on the next book in this series.

It's a good concept to lay the foundation on for the next few books.

Before I begin my review for Among Gods (Gods and Daemons book 1) by Quinn Blackbird, I would personally like to thank the author, the publishers and Booksprout for the opportunity to read this ARC and I have reviewed it honestly.

Welcome back to Blackbird's realm of wicked Gods and rigid hierarchy with an all new sickly yet lovable protagonist, devious man candy and a tantalising tale. Among Gods is a powerful introduction to an exciting new novella series. Though set in the same world as Blackbird's Gods and Monsters, this is a standalone series.

Among Gods features, but is not limited to, the following themes:
○ Gods
○ Book boyfriends
○ Sickly protagonist
○ Favouritism
○ NA fantasy

My overall rating for Among Gods is...

4.5 stars!

This book was such an interesting series starter with the pitying and sickly protagonist, Cinderella step-sister vibes and the mysterious and gorgeous Silver. Besides wanting to get a visualisation on Silver and his bed talents, the underlying story and unexpected daemon visitors has me craving me. Another epic tale from this word-goddess author!

Really enjoyed the direction this book laid out. Looking forward to the next installment, and more from this author.
