I was initially intrigued by this story set in Ghana, and while I never hated my experience listening to it, it fell flat in many ways. One, the character development of Afi was jarring. She went from being a beyond docile creature to not caring what anybody thought in a few chapters, and while I did find myself sympathizing with her, I didn’t have an emotional connection to any of the characters. It was a very simple story overall, no plot twists or anything exciting, and the ending was lack-lustre. It was quite obvious that the author herself had never had children and did very little research into the whole process, and while there were some interesting glimpses of Ghanaian culture, most of the book was set in the westernized city. The writing could have been worse but the whole story just felt rather pointless and like something I will probably forget very quickly.

Eli’s family does not like the woman he has fallen in love with and had a baby with. She is an outsider, and does not live the way they wish her to. So, they find Afi, a beautiful young woman from their hometown to marry Eli and convince him to finally leave “that woman”. This marriage changes everything for Afi and her family, they now have not just financial stability, but wealth. This is the story of Afi and Eli’s relationship. This book started out slow for me, but it definitely picked up until I was on the last chapter frantically reading and yelling out loud.

The ending was unsatisfying to me, personally.

I was surprised to like this book.  I decided to read it as part of the challenge and I basically just chose it because of the location.  It turned out I liked the main character, though none of the others.

I had mixed feelings about the storyline.  The main character is upset because she wants to be the wife, but like it or not, she is the second woman, the one the man did not want.  The man is a coward.  He should have told his mother to pound sand, but instead he cheated on the first woman with the second one.  The whole thing is manipulative and cowardly.  The first woman should have left him and taken him to the cleaners.
