I read it while I was studying in Uganda. There are so many interesting parts of the story, but it tends to feel as long as it is, often dragging and adding in anecdotes that don't match the progression of the story.

I should not have finished this book. I knew from the beginning that it wasn't any good. Disappointing.

Valitsin tämän kirjan, koska haluan lukea kirjallisuutta eri maista. Tähän mennessä olen lukenut vain muutamia Afrikkaan sijoittuvia kirjoja. Blixenin Eurooppalaisena Afrikassa ja McCall Smithin Mma Ramotswe-sarjaa. Molemmat kirjat ovat hyvin erilaisia kuin tämä teos.
Abessinialaiset kronikat kertoo Mugezin elämästä Ugandassa Idi Aminin varjossa. Kirjassa seurataan tiiviisti myös hänen sukunsa jäsenten kohtaloita Ugandan myrskyisen historian pyörteissä. Tapahtumat kerrotaan pääosin Mugezin näkökulmasta, mutta myös paljon suvun muun jäsenten näkökulmista.
Kukaan kirjan henkilöistä ei ole erityisen miellyttävä, mikä väistämättä vaikuttaa siihen kuinka paljon hahmoihin samaistuu ja heistä välittää. Päähenkilö Mugezi tuntuu olevan kaikkia vastaan ja useimmiten hän pääsee näissä valtataisteluissa niskanpäälle.
Kirjailina kirjoitustyyli ei valitettavasti sopinut itselleni lainkaan. Kaikki mahdolliset eritteet käydään kirjassa läpi ja seksuaalista sisältöä on aivan liikaa. Sain kirjasta naisvihamielisen vaikutelman, mikä myös vaikutti lukukokemukseen.
Pidin kirjan historiallisesta aspektista sekä itselleni uuteen kulttuuriin ja maisemaan tutustumisesta. Lisäksi kirja tarjoaa näkökulmia uskontojen valtaan Afrikassa ja ihmisten elämässä. Kirjasta saa myös perspektiiviä siihen millainen vaikutus siirtomaavallalla on ollut Afrikkaan, ja miten avustustyöntekijöiden kuvasto saattaa tuntua loukkaavalta. Nämä olivat kirjan parasta antia.
Mielestäni kirja on aivan liian pitkä. Mikäli tarpeettomat vastenmielisyydet olisi karsittu pois ja koko suvun tarinan kertomisesta siirretty fokusta enemmän Mugaziin, olisi tarinaa voitu tiivistää kolmeensataan sivuun.

This book does not live up to the "One Hundred Years of Solitude" comparison. The story does feature 3 generations of Mugezi's family, but the perspective is solely his. This leads to awkward narrative tweaks like Mugezi "remembering" his mother's and father's adolescences, which fall far short of the sweeping depth of a novel like "One Hundred Years of Solitude".
There's also a fundamental shallowness in that Mugezi is a frustratingly "good" character, cleverer and more hard-working than anyone else. All transgressions against him are completely unfounded, wrought from pure malice on the part of the transgressors. It does not make for an engaging story.
Finally, the writing itself is annoying, there's excessive exposition, gratuitous vulgarity, and some very strange word choice that makes it a chore to read at many parts.

The story of a family that survived (or didn't) the upheavals in Uganda's history. Despots were everywhere, found in all places - the government, the Catholic Church, the Muslim religion, the witch doctors, the family, and more. How to find your own voice and survive.
The story is well written, semi-autobiographical, but a bit hard to be drawn in.
