The sixth Bruno book has several apparently unrelated things happening at one: a French Resistance fighter dies of old age holding a bank note presumably from a train robbery in the 40s, a few country houses are burgled, and a gay Englishman is found beaten to death by his lover. This being a Bruno book, they are, of course, very connected.

Like all of the Bruno books, the ending is very abrupt, and an animal dies on page (
this time Bess, Pamela's horse, which broke it's leg when it threw her and injured her
). Unlike other books in the series, this one had much more plot and far less of the food and culture of the small town of St Denis.
