I checked this out to fill some of the 6 hours of driving time I did over the weekend as a nod to my middle-school days, and I was shocked to realize that all the memories I have of "reading" this book as a kid have been reshaped by the film adaptation, which has so many issues--don't even get me started.
Aside from my immediate shock and disappointment in myself for allowing a movie version to influence how I remember a book, I was able to jump right back into the story from my youth. I have to say, as cute as the movie version of Toothless is, I absolutely adore the petulant, self-centered, but ultimately loyal, book Toothless better. He comes alive in the story as his own stand-alone character who I just adore. He's whiny and stubborn and comical. Hiccup is scared and brave at the same time and I found myself entranced by his willingness to do the right thing even when it could cost him his life. I will definitely be getting back into this series.

Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III is the greatest dragon trainer around, but it was not that way. This is his story.
This is a rare instance where I liked the movie better. It was much more entertaining and had a lot more heart. This was funny on parts, but just okay overall.

Really fun as a family audiobook experience. A bit tricky to wrap our heads around the differences between the book vs movie but we’re excited to try more of the books.

This was an audio book read by David Tennant, who did a beautiful job breathing life into this book. I laughed a lot at the jokes and the character voices. Oftentimes I wished that I had some kids around to share these jokes with! With that being said, this book is very different from the movie, which I personally liked, although I did miss the film's version of Toothless.

This book was great. If you saw the movie don't expect the book to be that same. There is a great amount of difference between the book and movie. The book was still a fun read. Hickup is still Hickup.

I don't review many books. Mostly because if I reviewed and rated all the books I have read, well, there wouldn't be any time for reading!
But in this case I will make an exception.
To start with, this is not How to Train Your Dragon the movie. I really, really hate when books become movies simply because it is rare that a film actually follows the plot line of the book. Whether better or worse, the movie always ends up being something entirely different except on those extremely rare occasions it sticks to the book.
I say all this to say if you are interested in reading this book because you've seen the movie, please, spare yourself the trouble. This book has almost nothing to do with the movie. The plot and even the characters are entirely different.
Is that a bad thing? In my opinion, no. The book is a bit hard to get into at first, but once it takes off it is an entertaining read. The characters are not quite memorable, but there is the action, adventure, and humor I do so love in a novel.

This is a kids series and it's the story of Hiccup and his dragon Toothless. I'm a keen dragon-fan, and I particularly like the charm of this series for the relationship the Vikings have with their Dragon counter-parts. In this story (the first) we follow Hiccup and his other friends as they have to first find their Dragons and then train them...
I actually audio-booked this and I would thoroughly recommend the audio-book as a great way to read this (although I've also read some of these books aloud with my younger brother). It's narrated by David Tennant and he does an excellent job of bringing the world and characters to life. Not only that, but you also get sound effects and also some fun musical interludes to set the tone.
Perfect for kids but still lots of fun for all I really enjoyed it. I will say that Toothless is my favourite character because of his snark and sass, but he's how a Dragon should be and I like the pairing. Solid 3*s overall :D

Definitely not my kind of book. For two little boys, however, it was a fun read-aloud.
