This was a bit of a roller coasting of a reading experience, I picked it up for both Translateathon and March Mystery Madness, and all of the descriptions hinting that there was "a thing" about this one so I didn't read more and when right to the book. That being said I kept on wondering what "the thing" was. The format? The resolve? A twist? That really impacted the reading experience for me, and I will admit that's on me because I don't like to know too much about books going in. Turns out, the thing was something the reader couldn't have known at all! Sigh.
Putting all of that aside, this is a well crafted, although pretty harrowing, story. I was quite engaged an invested in the characters and continually trying to figure out where it was going, and what it was saying. An engaging, dark work that was quite different from what I normally read. I do love that readathons get me to expand my horizons and this book did just that!
