I didn't expect Heartstone to have a sequel....

I'M SO FREAKING EXCITED YA'LL

It was so lovely to return to this world and these characters. I was delighted to find a murder mystery at the core of this plot, which I love. The ending didn't wrap up as much as I would want, but now I'm dying to get my hands on the last book so I can finally have my happy ending.

Pride and Prejudice and Monsters.

That's not the name of this book, but that description is all over the press release. Author Elle Katherine White used the Jane Austen characters as inspiration in the first book of this series, Heartstone. Now the second book, well, she continues doing that. She captures the tone and style of Austen while adding neat fantasy-epic stuff.

It also has the most honest, truthful cover blurb I have ever seen: "No one said marriage to a dragon rider would be easy."

It's a wild adventure inspired by Austen, not a parody such as Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.
As such, it's just fun. You'll need to read this right away. Have you started yet?

I really enjoyed this sequel. I was intrigued to see what the author would do with Pride and Prejudice characters outside of the story, especially when the first book was SO STRONG. While I don’t think this was as strong as the first book, it absolutely held its own.

You can’t help but root for Aliza and Alastair, and I absolutely love the story being told.

The selkie!!! I absolutely LOVED that. The expansion of the lore and the world building is truly what makes this series so amazing.

Review of Dragonshadow
By: Elle Katherine White
Alistair and Akarra are requested to protect Castle Selwyn that has experienced attacks on the Idar, and a girl has been taken.  Aliza not wanting to be left behind and worried for her new husband insists on coming, despite his assistance that she’s not ready.  The couple realizes that killing the Great Worm wasn’t enough and that war is coming, but first Castle Selwyn’s Lord and Lady are keeping dangerous secrets.
I love how the story allows for an exploration of this world with our characters traveling somewhere else instead of staying the same place.  Our couple has to go on a long journey encountering various dangers and creatures, and we get a hint that the war isn’t over. Not all like the Dragonriders, but they are respected.  The prejudice against Aliza is still strong as she is Nakla and not a Dragon Rider.  She is determined to prove herself and is tired of being reminded of that she is Nakla.  We are introduced to creatures such as Ghastradi, who are so creepy, and the Guardians of the Rushless Wood have this quality that is unnatural and cold, but you understand them.  The story explores this marriage that gets complicated, and the couple gets the chance to build a bond.  This is also compared to another marriage in the story that doesn’t come off as healthy.  The wife pretends she is content, but Aliza begins to understand that she is not.  She is kept silent by her husband Lord Selwyn his love comes off as selfish and one sided.  Seeing this marriage allows Aliza and Alistair to understand how beautiful their own is and how lucky they are.  They work so well together and have a great partnership that is challenged by this world.  The story does deal with the loss of a child and a character having to put aside her grief.

*3.5 stars*

This was not as good as the first book but it was still good. This book follows the same two main characters from book 1, which are inspired by Elizabeth and Darcy, but all the other characters are not present in this and their absence was very noticeable to me. I still really liked the main characters relationship and their chemistry but I missed their connections to other people.

Also, plotwise this felt like a side quest, where the characters had a lot of mini adventures and faced mini dangers, and those weren't that interesting to me. Nonetheless, I think the world and the magical creatures in this series are so fascinating, which compensated a little bit for the not-so-gripping plot.

I liked this book a lot. The author knows how to make each page interesting. I only rated it 4 stars because I felt like this book wasn’t as good as the first. The writing was just as good, but I didn’t feel as drawn into this storyline. I didn’t really understand the twist ending and I never felt like the characters were in any actual danger.

Oh my gosh I liked the 1st book..... I loved this one!!!! Finally able to really get to know them together learn them as a couple and I was happy to read the start of them becoming them.... can’t wait to see when Alastair figures out they are stronger together then when he thinks leaving her to protect her is the right thing to do.
