“Sunlight and birdsong and blue skies can be brutal in this job. Perhaps it's the contrast that does it. Death and hope.”

I remember really enjoying the first book last year, and I'm still not sure why it took me this long to pick up the sequel. I guess it's one of the series that has slipped between the cracks of my TBR mountain... But I'm glad that I finally made time for In The Dark. While there were a couple things that prevented me from giving it an even higher rating, there is no denying that I still enjoyed my time with this second book. I confess that I had forgotten most things about the first book and its characters, but it was still quite easy to read book two without that information. In The Dark offers a completely new case, and while there are references to the previous book, as a whole this sequel can be read as a stand-alone as well. The plot itself was engaging and quite dark, and there were many twists to be found along the way. I was a bit disappointed to guess the truth about Hannah's killer very early on though... But I can't deny that I never saw the full picture. The story uses a multiple POV structure, and it takes a while to become used to the constant POV switches. It was a bit frustrating to have to guess who's turn it was all the time, and it slowed down the pace a little... But the plot was intriguing enough to keep me reading. All in all it's a solid enough detective thriller and I hope to continue the series some time soon.

This book was given to me with the admonition from my mother, "It is dark but you will learn things about how the United Kingdom does its policework." I must say, both of her statements were true.

It is in every way dark. And it kept me guessing until the end. Well, I did figure the final murder was murder, but it is the only bit that I managed to get right.

A young woman and child are found in the basement of an old house. The old man who lives there claims he's never seen them before. The young woman can't speak and the old man is suffering from Alzheimer's, it's up to Fawley and his team to get to the bottom of it.

Though this is the second in a series, I read it as a stand-alone and it was fine. I was able to access all of the story.

What I really enjoyed about this novel was that it switched narration styles. Some is in first person. Other parts are evidentiary transcripts. And still other parts are tweets or articles reproduced in the pages of the novel. It is like reading a scrapbook to put together the narrative and I really enjoyed it.
