I have never seen such well done character development. Truly a work of art.

Instantly fell in love with Naguib Mahfouz's writing. Captivating, felt like drowning inside the overwhelming heaviness of Egypt's history.

This really wasn't for me. I understand the gender dynamics are setting accurate, but the nonstop degradation of women was still tiring. I also found the internal monologues to be convoluted and unnatural, although this may be the translation. The first 3/4 of this book is extremely slow with the only events being a couple of arranged marriages taking place. It picks up after the occupation kicks in, but at that point I was pretty checked out.

This is one of the most frustrating, real and heart breaking books ever written. Not an easy novel at all but worth it. I’ve been meaning to go back and re-read the trilogy now that I have some perspective but it genuinely frightens me. Girding my loins (and trying to remember which idiot took the book off my shelf and didn’t return it) for now!
