Lady Cop continues the story of Constance, Norma, and Fleurette Kopp, based on newspaper articles about Constance Kopp. Constance became a jail matron in charge of female prisoners.
A male prisoner faking illness and is taken to the hospital. Under Constance's watch, a distraction diverts her attention and the man escapes. It is the Sheriff, not Constance, whose job is on the line and she determines to find the escapee and save Sheriff Heath's reputation and job.
The escapee was a doctor who faked the illness of his patients to extort money from the families.
Lady Cop Makes Trouble becomes a news story headline bringing unwanted attention to Constance.
As jail matron, Constance is both firm and humane.
I might not ever see these women cleansed of their crimes and misdeeds, and I might not keep them from misfortune and misery, but I could rid them of vermin and send them to sleep in a clean and quiet bed. For some of them, it was the first night they'd spend free of torment--of one kind of another--in years. from Lady Cop Makes Trouble
Constance becomes involved with the women in the jail, their backstories revealing the lives of women a hundred years ago.

This was an interesting story. When I started it, I didn't realize it was based on historical facts. The idea of a woman police person in the early 2oth century was a novel idea. The story revolves around Constance Kopp and her quest of a job as a policewoman. Sheriff Heath takes a chance on Constance and makes her a deputy sheriff. This case takes her from New Jersey to New York and in between. Constance is tenacious and hard headed. She won't be deterred in her search for a con man who escaped during her watch. The story continues to unfold and she meets like-minded independent women who encourage her on. It is also nice to have a story where the woman is not a piece of arm candy but who actually has a brain and is not afraid to use it. I really enjoyed it and now I have to find the first book in the series "Girl waits with gun"
I absolutely love this series. It follows the adventures of the three Kopp sisters trying to make ends meet, and concentrates on Constance Kopp who is trying hard to become the first female sheriff's deputy in their county. The story is based on real people and actual events from circa 1915 New Jersey. It is amazing how vivid and lively the story has been written based on short newspaper articles. Great period detail without sounding like research - not a wasted word in the book (great editing!). And the sisters are strongly independent individuals yet remain very much women of their own time (not a "modern" woman plopped into the past). You will be amazed when you finish the book and read the author's notes to find out just how much is fact. The author did a wonderful job pulling it seamlessly together. Highly highly recommend.
The writing doesn't necessarily have depth to it, but the fact that this series is based on actual events makes it intriguing.
I received an ARC of this book, so I read the first in the series first. I liked that one -- but I *really* liked this one. It was as though the first was just very extended background and now the fun starts!
Another fine outing for everyone's favorite female Deputy Sheriff, Constance Kopp.
It lacks some of the narrative snap of the previous book, but it's a good story. I think it's a bit overlong, and a bit of a Railroad as far as mysteries go.
But there are some very good lines and it's nice to see everyone back together again.

This book was the sequel that I didn't know that I needed. I thoroughly enjoyed Stewart's first novel and was delighted by the second. Stewart allows us to see into the mind of Constance and experience what it would be like to be the first Deputy Sheriff in New Jersey. I'm already excited to read more of her adventures.
