I was really surprised where this book ended. Yes, the entire book was a build up to the Damon/Elena relation, but it was a nice surprise that they went all the way. Just as it was a nice surprise to find out that Stefan really doesn't return (except for one beautiful scene as a ghost). Don't get me wrong, I like Stefan, and I'm still sad that he died, but I am surprised that they dared to leave him dead. That gives death more impact, and I like that.
Matt is finally happy, with a normal (albeit really strong) nice human girl, and I hope he will stay that way (ok, he'll get in danger, and it's always a much bigger risk because he is "just" human, but at least he's happy!)
I'm curious how the Meredith situation will play out. She's definetly not ok with being a vampire...
And I don't like Guardians... at least we have a build up for the next book, with a dying Elena because they killed Jack (which does kind of make sense for the Guardians, because his largest goal were vampires, the same goal as they have. But I still hate them for doing it ;))>
All in all an enjoyable read, and I really want the next book.

An amazing journey though the lives of our supernaturals again, but with the new twists of scientifically made vampires, as well as the threat of the Celestial Guardians ever present!!

AGAIN with the cliffhanger? They're quickly becoming redundant and exhaustive in this series, and I might genuinely start hating them in all the books I read from now on because of this.
And it was getting good. Or better, at least. It seems I was wrong, Stefan might be gone for good and Damon and Elena are going to end up together, for real. I did think these artificial vampires are a bit much. But I was willing to overlook it. This could have been a four-star rating, but now it's more like 3.50 stars, and I'm keeping it to three stars because I'm mad.

I felt like this installment of the series was just fine for me. Not super great but not horrible either so I don’t have too much to say about this one honestly.
I wish we got a little more Bonnie cause I love her but I’m happy for her & liked what developed for her. I really liked the twist at the end in the sense that it was unexpected.

listen—i don't like stefan here. want to know what i liked even less, though? whatever treatment l. j. smith deemed wise to “bless” him with in the previous book. and the fact that they didn't even bother to correct their misstep? what?
generally, i enjoy love triangles. one thing i will never–ever fuck with, though, is authors acting like the only good way to resolve one is... eliminating the competition. if you know, you know. i find this so incredibly lazy, and infuriating. i hoped until the very last second this destiny wasn't going to befall stefan of all people, but alas.
i'm, like, 20%+ into “unmasked”—the last and final book in the series, finally!—and although i want to be positive about this and believe that l. j. smith will, kind of, repair this—i also don't have high hopes after this whole debacle.

Nothing like the tv show not sure how I feel about that. The story was good just not what I expected.

This book was a little less horrible than the previous installment but that's not saying much. Once again the death of the villains were laughable. They were way too easy to kill and the manner in which they could be killed was unimaginive and anticlimactic. The ending was okay but I was still left unsatisfied by the rushed conclusion and that fact that despite everything Damon does for everyone he still comes in second to Stefan in their eyes. I liked that Elena had become stronger with her guardian powers and Bonnie's magic had grown into making her a full blown witch; the strong female characters I had loved from the original L.J books felt as if they had returned and became even more amazing. But I can say with absolute certainty that the books written after midnight were all subpar at best and downright horrendous at worst. It's clear to me that this final trilogy is a desperate attempt to correct the mistakes made in The Hunters trilogy but those mistakes cannot be fixed so easily. The series was ruined from then on and it will forever be tainted by the awful plots we've endured since then. I am so glad that I am almost finished with this series. Reading it has been torture and I can guarantee that I will NEVER touch these books again.
