This is Book One of Tara’s Necklace series and is a New Adult Portal Fantasy book set in a desert world of fading magic, a library with crumbling texts and lost knowledge, and lush grasslands in a world of shadow creatures. If I am being honest, I had a hard time getting into this book in the beginning. I personally had a hard time following the information being given and while reading would often forget what was just said especially in the first part of the book. That being said, once I made it further through the book I started to like where the story was going because there was a lot more happening plot wise. I also enjoyed the scenes between Kith and Kumiel the most. I did like the main character and loved what she represented. You do not typically see chronic illness representation in a character, much less the lead in the story. Dealing with autoimmune disorders myself, I can understand how she feels.

This is a beautifully written story setting up the world of wisps, shades, and shadows. There's a heavy dose of history laid out throughout Kith's lessons. I particularly enjoyed the way this storytelling echos her rise from a dismissed shade-child who is encouraged to scarcely breathe for fear of injury. Kith's struggle to not only find value in herself but her purpose and also hope that she's not counting down the days till her inevitable end. Like Kith's journey, the world starts out slow, days being monotonous, but the ending makes it well worth it. In a sense, the reader will experience it all right along with Kith. I'm looking forward to reading more about her adventure, along with Finchoa and Kumiel.

This was a fascinating book. The world and history the author created was unique and intriguing. The main character was likable and I enjoyed watching her grow and accept that she had a strength and purpose despite the rest of those in her world telling her she was weak. The story is well written and draws you in. Highly recommend to anyone who enjoys fantasy, adventure and a strong female main character that finds her inner strength and determination despite the obstacles in front of her. I am definitely looking forward to reading the second book!
