I’ve really enjoyed previous books by this author but this one fell short for me

This was a good read. I'm a huge "Sex and the City" fan so I loved reading about the dating columnist who is pretty cynical on life but rediscovers herself. And, as an Irish-American from Boston with roots, history, and cousins in remote areas of Ireland, the American side of this story (an Irish-American from Boston who loves the Red Sox and Bruce Springsteen. I mean, c'mon! Written for me!) was right up my alley. The only thing keeping me from giving this 5 stars is that it felt extremely cliche at times. I found myself saying to myself at times, "Oh my God, he did not just say that. Of course, he did!" At the end of the day, it was a good book and made me want to go back to Ireland even more than I thought possible.

Wow this was emotional- it was funny, it was joyous and it was heartbreaking yet heartwarming!
I loved our main characters and their setting and really enjoyed the friendships formed on the island and all the characters. I’m not sure I can find fault with this book… maybe the way it ends but I also don’t think it could end any other way, I just want to see everything tied up in a happily ever after bow! This book wouldn’t be as good as it is if that had happened though!
I’m glad the character mostly was falling in love with herself and being true to who she was whilst finding someone to love and not giving herself or her dreams up in pursuit of that. This isn’t just a love story it’s a self love story

The last 2 chapters absolutely RUINED what could otherwise have been a really poignant book. I am unspeakably disappointed that the author chose to cheapen it by forcing a stereotypical HEA between the MCs.

A proper, meaningful ending would have been for Cleo to bask in her book’s successful publishing and her newfound sense of self and home and community and then for Mack to take what he’d learned in his own journey of self-discovery and apply it to reconciling with his wife in an informed, meaningful way to heal the family bonds he’d always longed for as a child. Having Cleo and Mack go their separate ways having learned and grown in themselves from their time together would have been a much more powerful ending to their story.

The fact that Mack was married for the entirety of the story was a massive turn-off. The author made it just morally gray enough that I didn’t straight up DNF it, but it was a detriment to the story. This is another factor adding to my desire for her to have had them go their separate ways having grown as people instead of the stupid ending we got.

I will end by saying that the setting of the island and the depiction of the community there was top notch. Easy 5 stars for setting and ambiance.

I thought this would be a light rom-com, but it really is a bit more meaningful than that. No spoilers, I love the concept of marking a milestone with promises to oneself.
