A loner transplanted Israeli housewife in Silicon Valley realizes that she does not know her son, her husband or the country she has chosen to immigrate to. When tragedy begins to strike, and then steamroll, suspicion starts to fill the gaps in her knowledge, and she cannot tell whether she is making logical conclusions or paranoid leaps. She is so isolated and patronized by her cold husband that she cannot even make demands of those around her to satisfy her curiosity. A previous tragedy appears to have propelled her to the US and then frozen her in place. I feel like I want a sequel. I want her to speak up and do something for herself. Her son gets freedom in the end but she does not. The story was beautifully written, and it has one of the best ambiguous endings I have ever read. The twists are impossible to predict and yet feel organic. Love, love, love this book. One of my favorites of this year.
