The story of Scout will have a place in my memory. I love how I got to see her curiosity and innocence in a time of many ups and downs (more downs than ups, unfortunately, as the story carries on). Two of my favorite parts were-

  1. When Scout’s teacher told her not to learn anymore letters as “It’s liable to interfere with your reading”, yet her father, Atticus Finch, continued to read to her. Reading to your children is so important, it creates a bond that will last.
  2. The way Scout handled Arthur “Boo” Radley. The kindness she displayed to him and the friendship she extended, not thinking, or rather- caring- of the stories about him that circled around town.
Now, we get to the main story- the trial. This is a trial of a man of color accused of assaulting a white girl. This was a difficult part to read and, as it is a graphic novel, see the pictures (No, there are no scenes of sexual assault). This is a very sad story once you start delving into Mayella’s family dynamics. I could go into more, believe me I have more thoughts on the trial and outcome, but I do not want to spoil anything for someone who is new to the book. Read it for yourself.

*What I have expressed are entirely my own thoughts. I was not compensated in any monetary way.*

The illustrations are beautiful, and the text is mostly faithful to the novel. I don't recommend this adaptation for people who haven't already read or don't remember much about the original novel, though. Some lines of dialog are responses or references to lines that have been omitted, and as a result the dialog may not always make sense to readers who aren't very familiar with the source material. For example, there's a point where it appears that Dill is disagreeing with himself (as opposed to disagreeing with Scout) because Scout's line has been skipped.

Ich war positiv überrascht von der Graphic Novel, vielleicht sollte ich das Buch auch noch irgendwann lesen.
