Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to listen to an early copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review. Here in the Dark by Alexis Soloski will be released on December 5th, 2023.

If you are a theater fan, you will likely enjoy this book. Here in the Dark follows Vivienne, a theater critic with a past involving addiction. She is contacted by a student at the local college who is requesting an interview with her as part of his thesis - she agrees and they meet up. That is the last anyone will see of the student before he disappears and Vivienne is pulled into a personal investigation due to being the last one to see him. The story features a cast of different characters and personalities and the author does a really good job of letting all of them shine through - the narrator does great voices for these characters as well.

Now onto my review. I didn't love it. I went back and forth a lot while reading this book - on one hand, I enjoyed the production of the audiobook, I enjoyed the premise of the story and the writing. On the other hand, I wasn't super invested in finding out what happened. I don't know what it was, maybe I couldn't connect with the theater aspect of it.

Overall, Here in the Dark is a fine story. I would definitely recommend picking up the audiobook version of the story.

what a great book to start the year with! 4.5 stars rounded up

this was a bit different from the thrillers i usually read, but i really loved it. a dark, noir-esque mystery, with psychological elements and a flawed yet likable FMC. this was a fun read even with the heavier topics within, and while there was plenty of suspense and unknowns throughout, i was laughing constantly at the FMC inner dialogue as well as the scenes with her best friend.

what an outstanding debut novel. can’t wait to see what soloski has for us next!

A random library grab and I loved it. Chemically-addled theater critic turns amateurishly amateur detective? Yes please to all that vodka on an empty stomach chaos.

It’s the 21st century, can’t a girl go through a mystery without being harassed and assaulted by every man she meets? That’s just the tip of the iceberg of issues I have with this book. I would love to live in the fantasy New York that this critic lives in with so many revivals opening every week. I would also hate to live in this fantasy world where stalking and recording people without their consent is somehow not illegal…

The best audiobook I've ever listened to. It was like listening to Natasha Lyonne and Debi Mazar read me a story. The writing was Sara Gran lite, and the plot is basically The Game. Not a 5 bc the interactions with the best friend were very stereotypical of this kind of thriller and could've been better
