Beautiful explanation of why medicine favors men over women, with contemporary and historical examples. The organization of the chapters as systems is thoughtful and creative. As someone who works in healthcare, this book spoke to me through recognizable stories that I see on the regular.

My biggest problem in this book, is that I don't have the tools the author wants me to have.
In the conclusion, she says, "Among my greatest hopes in writing this book is that it will give women the tools they need to demand the care they deserve."
Lofty, but she never explained what those tools are or how to find them. I liked the format of the book, but I wish each chapter had ended with resources or questions or suggestions on how to talk to the doctor/approach the current medical system.
I finished this book with a stronger knowledge of where medicine came from, but I didn't feel empowered to choose a course for where I'm headed next.

It was a good read in that it explained a lot about the history of women's health throughout all body systems. It was NOT a fun read. This is horrifying info, yet so accurate to experience. So much rage, both for the history of treatment, and with a couple of the doctors I'm currently having to deal with. So much and yet so little has changed in centuries of medicine.
Graphic: Medical content and Medical trauma
Moderate: Misogyny, Racism, Sexism, Forced institutionalization, and Religious bigotry
Minor: Ableism, Body shaming, Chronic illness, Domestic abuse, Eating disorder, Fatphobia, Infertility, Blood, Dementia, Abortion, Pregnancy, and Classism
