I was in a giant book rut and asked friends and family for suggestions. My cousin suggested a Randy Wayne White book. The first one I could get my hands on was Captiva. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I love reading about places where I live and the book had quirky characters, just like real life in Florida. I'm going to go back find a copy of the first book and start reading from the beginning.

The first half of the book is the more interesting one as a portrait of a marina, but doesn't quite work. The second half is a by-the-numbers thriller that moves briskly.

Never would have picked this book up if I hadn't been on a two week vacation in Captiva. Best selling thrillers are not usually my thing, but I'm really glad I read this one. Loved the fisheries science and environmental politics that were woven through the story. I plan to read more Doc Ford novels.

I enjoyed this book a lot. I'm a big fan of Carl Hiassen and I definitely see the resemblence. This was my first Doc Ford book but I'm interested in reading more of them. Good beach read!

Captive is a very well written book and a big improvement over the preceding book in the Doc Ford series. It was good to see Doc Ford doing things that utilized the skills from his time in the CIA. A very high 3 star book and good enough to warrant more Doc Ford books. White seemed to have found his groove with this book.

I'm at about 2/3. I didn't know that a book that starts with an explosion could be so boring. It's about politics! And not major politics. Bullshit local politics.
The only reason I'm still powering through is because of the coronavirus lockdown. My TBR pile is dangerously low and I can't just be walking away from novels when I don't know where my next novel is coming from. I could very well mind-starve.
But damn, this book is testing me.
UPDATE: Officially given up. Didn't make it any farther.

I love the Doc Ford Series and I'm very happy with the way the book ended.

I chose to read this book because it took place in Sanibel & Captiva Island which is by where I used to once live. I didn't realize that it was written to bring light to some of the fishing issues and corruption in southwest Florida. It was an enjoyable read overall but I got bored by the story halfway in unfortunately.
