i loved being a passenger on soraya’s journey of morality, power, and self-acceptance. the world-building was absolutely wonderful, would love (and could totally see) an on-screen adaptation! such a feministic, empowering fantasy read. and the romance was very sweet and very quote-worthy.

A fun introduction to Persian folklore and fairy tales. I enjoyed spending time with the main character, Soraya, and watching her gain confidence and a strong sense of self. The beginning and end of the book were very engaging; I felt that the middle section lagged a bit. Overall, it was a nice read!

The first 40% of this book was pretty slow for me. Once we reached the 40% mark it suddenly became a lot more fast paced as we got to the main storyline. From 40% onward I enjoyed the book! But it just took quite awhile to finally get there.

really liked the last third, but the beginning felt a bit too much like acotar to me, or like a bit too cliche? idk, but I liked that the author included a note on Persian mythology in the end, that was pretty interesting

I think this was such a strong concept that lost its way out of the gate and ended in a way that felt quite ham fisted. Despite being quite long I don’t feel like we got to connect with many of the characters. I enjoyed the twisted fairytale vibes though.

Forgot to mention that the author perfectly captured how it feels to be in England in January:

She had never realized how easily hope died when there was no sunlight, how hard it was to believe that another day was worth fighting for when there was only night.

Phew I am on a roll baby. Anyways this was so great!!! I mean sure Soraya did a few things that might be stupid in hindsight but I mean she was very sheltered throughout her life so I understand.
The subtle enemies to lovers with Parvaneh was simply <3<3.
Also
the way Azad was so manipulate even I was bamboozled. But maybe that’s the bloodlust talking idk
Finally I have to say that I loved
the fact that Soraya got her powers back towards the end. Just when I was thinking Oh her powers sure weren’t developed the author was like BAM
Honestly I’m glad I finally got around to reading this. Very much worth it.
