Not even the groovy illustrations can save this repetitive take on "The Ants Go Marching." My son didn't like it and I hated reading it. Of all the Pete the Cat song adaptations, only "Twinkle, Twinkle" really works. That's because the lyrics aren't repetitive and it includes verses you rarely hear. This might be okay for kids to flip through, but that's about it.

My 4 year old grandson picked this book from our local library and we read it before going to bed. He enjoyed "reading" the book and looking at the colorful pictures. Before reading the next "stanza" I would get him to count the number of Petes. Nice book.

On the surface, it's a cute book. Teaches counting, easy to sing along to, familiar characters - the kids'll like it.

But....where are all the Petes coming from? There's one "real" Pete - the Groovy One, Pete Prime - and others just keep....appearing. With the exact same face and body position. It becomes existentially terrifying.

And the rain. It just hovers over them.

Welcome to Night Vale, Pete.

Meh... For die hard Pet the Cat fans, I guess.

I think they are pushing the Pete the Cat books too far and lowering the quality. Stick with Litwin and not the shorter newer versions. Does go to a song.

It's one of children's favorite cats, Pete, returning to sing a new song "The Petes Go Marching" patterned after the well-known "The Ants Go Marching." The artwork is created with pen and ink with watercolor and acrylic paint on 300lb hot press paper. For more #kidlit, #mglit, and #yalit book reviews, please visit my blog: The Miller Memo.
