I guess it's my fault to expect too much because the graphic novel is written and drawn by Mariko Tamaki, especially counting the fact that her recent graphic novel called Laura Dean is Breaking Up with Me was a marvel.

However, this slice-of-life and coming-of-age kind of graphic novel doesn't work for me; not the growing up part while contemplating life during the summer or the family conflict inflicted in the narrative. I ended up getting bored in the middle since it felt like a chore to finish. Shame.

Though nothing much happened, the social drama and storytelling was very compelling. It was beautiful and real. Left me feeling both a sense of love and sadness.
