More like a 4.5 due to my uncertainty with how disability is discussed at times, but that said: this is the most gripping horror novel I've read in a while, and it articulates some of my most potent fears in life in a way that made them disturbingly compelling. I almost said beautiful, but I can't. It also spoke to the Jewish anxiety that lives in me at all times, and made me feel a little less crazy.

For some less known comps: it's the New York City gothic and parenthood-as-horror beauty of Victor Lavalle's The Changeling merged with the unnerving but captivating setting of Only Murders In the Building and the there's-something-behind-that-door dread of Archive 81. Also, it's delightfully disgusting. Highly recommend.

This reads like if RL Stine tried to write Rosemary’s Baby. I’ve never hated a character as much as I hated Reid - hope his baby eats him.

This was something!! Took me a while to get into the book. The beginning was hard for me. But then it got good! The themes of motherhood and ableism are very accurately depicted. The ending was perfect. Reminded me a bit of “Mexican gothic” which I loved so so much. Still stunned that this was written by a man because of how amazingly he writes about motherhood and postpartum. Cannot wait to read more books by Nat Cassidy, consider me a fan!
