A really interesting premise but it was just too many books in one to keep my attention.
Bouncing between two stories, interesting in their own way but that hadn’t yet come together just distracted me from both of them.
I either wanted to stay with Kaladin and his story although the slavery I could have done without. Or with Szeth because his magic was cool af and the assassin stuff was very well written and dynamic. I wasn’t into Shallan’s story line so much at first because it moved so slowly but I also wanted to see her steal that soul-caster thing and if she could get her family out of trouble.

All that to say, there’s a bunch of stuff in this mammoth of a book to keep you interested if you like war, magic, thievery, etc. but my goodness, 1200 pages is just too much. Couldn’t hang. I’d watch the movie though if that ever happens.

At the beginning i was confused and still am confused, just about different things. The book relly doesn't feel like a thousand pages, it reads incredibly, no part drags or seems too drawn out. Can't wait for the next part, can't imagine waiting four years for the second book. The reveals are crazy, characters amazing, magic system confusing and unique, cant wait when I'll understand it all. Life before death, strength before weakness, journey before destination. 🍃

I listened to the audiobook version so that perhaps may have changed how I experienced this book, but I loved it. It's a little slow but because I was listening to it, that didn't bother me as much. The character development is strong in this book since it's setting up the series and introducing everything.

Sanderson does a great job of world building and creating interesting magic systems and fantasy elements.

I found myself surprised by how philosophical this book is, exploring various themes and perspectives around war, religion, leadership, roles of different peoples in civilization, classism, prejudices, etc. There are different cultures and peoples across the world built in this book and they all have different ideals on war, gender roles, religion, culture, some find fighting detestable while others relish it as their main purpose in life.

The book follows characters that are royalty and slaves, soldiers and scholars, those that both use and are used. One of my favorite parts of this book was the philosophical debates the characters would have. It was surprisingly witty and smart.

" I’m not trying to make a point consciously ever in my writing–though I do think that good stories should raise questions and make readers think. " - from Brandon's FAQ - https://faq.brandonsanderson.com/knowledge-base/tell-me-more-about-religion-and-your-writing/

While Sanderson explores various aspects of being human that relate heavily in our own world, depending on what your experience is, the story doesn't explore much in the way of sexuality of the human condition, but Sanderson doesn't dive into this aspect much anyways.

" I don’t make a big deal of it, because I tend not to make a big deal of the sexuality of side characters in general. " - https://faq.brandonsanderson.com/knowledge-base/how-do-you-feel-about-gay-characters/

I got curious and read through his FAQ a bit on his beliefs. He is very open in these FAQs, answering difficult questions, but explains himself well. He is a Mormon, but liberal in a way. It seems he has changed in the past 10-15 years, and now supports the LGBTQ+ community. I'm curious to see if he explores various sexualities in his more recent books or going forward.

All in all, I enjoyed the book very much and look forward to reading the rest of the series.

With every reread I find new information. It’s a thick and heavy read but feels relevant for the times.

Wow. Just wow. I was enjoying the character development and stories throughout the book, but those last 200 pages were AMAZING! I swear, I couldn’t put the book down. The pacing picked up so quickly that I’m still sitting here wondering what the hell just happened! The war scenes were incredible, the world-building was out of this world, and the reveals were mind-blowing—I mean, I’m perplexed.

It's difficult to articulate words for a review on this because of how much I want to say.
I loved it, and will continue following the series from now on.

When it says "High Fantasy," it means it. If you are not a full on fantasy nerd yet, you might struggle with this book. It constantly switches in POVs, timelines, flashbacks, with 5 main POVs and 18 total. Insanely large scale worldbuilding with several detailed cultures, languages, and life styles. Thousands of years of histories, multiple magic and political systems. It's a lot to handle at once, but never once I felt like the book is info-dumping. The page count is totally justified.

It starts slow, REALLY slow. I can see many people unable to get through it due to the sheer amount characters and information it tries to present. You either love it or hate it.
It is the first book in a massive 10 book series, and it sure does settle the ground for your entry to this whole new world. The "payoff" really only starts at the last 100 pages, the ending is a rapid fire of resolutions that felt so satisfying, yet still leaving for more to be desired on the next book. I read the book across a month, but read the last part in one day. That says something.

Favorite highlights: Leadership. Justice. Trust. Overcoming mental health and grief. Exploring real world problems in a fictional world. And, of course:
"Journey Before Destination."

If you are planning to step into this series, be ready for your brain to be rewired. Now everything you see will be a Stormlight reference!
